The Plit chair breaks away from the conventional idea of a static seat that supports the body in a linear manner. Instead, it embraces the dynamic nature of sitting by dividing the seating surface into two halves. These halves can independently react to the user's movements and readjustments, providing a more personalized and comfortable experience. The split design is inspired by Barnett Newman's Onement series of paintings, creating a visually striking negative space that celebrates both independence and unity.
What sets the Plit chair apart is its emphasis on flexibility and support. The seat surface is scored to provide better ergonomic support, accommodating the changing postures and weight distribution of the user. The base of the chair is composed of two curving strips, giving the impression of fluidity and leniency. This design choice adds to the overall aesthetic appeal of the chair while maintaining its structural integrity.
The Plit chair is realized through a combination of machined and cold-formed aluminum. The base features a polished and black satin finish, created through masked anodization, resulting in a laminated effect. The seat is made of overmolded Polypropylene Copolymer around a machined aluminum internal frame, providing a smooth matte finish with slight texturing. The seat components are connected using a set of bolts, ensuring stability and durability.
Technical specifications of the Plit chair include a seat height of 453mm, seat width and depth of 445mm, and a seat angle of 5 degrees. The backrest measures 405mm in height and width, with a backrest angle of 5 degrees and a lumbar support height of 155mm. The base has a total height of 505mm and a depth of 515mm. When unassembled, the chair can be conveniently packaged in a size of 600mm x 600mm x 300mm.
The Plit chair is not only a functional piece of furniture but also a design statement. Its flowing lines and sculptural aesthetic make it ideal for creating focal points in modern corporate and residential interiors. The chair's relatively simplistic features allow for repeated use without overwhelming the intended visual composition.
The Plit chair project started in May 2020 and was completed in November 2020. Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted to understand the dynamic nature of sitting and the need for adaptable seating solutions. By addressing the challenges of static seating and incorporating flexibility into the design, the Plit chair offers a fresh perspective on how we interact with furniture.
Kutay Guler, the designer behind the Plit chair, has received recognition for this innovative design. The chair was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2021. This prestigious award acknowledges the creativity and resourcefulness of the design, as well as its contribution to improving the quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
The Plit chair, with its unique split design and emphasis on flexibility, challenges the traditional notions of seating. By embracing the dynamic nature of sitting, this side chair offers a comfortable and personalized experience while adding a touch of sophistication to any space.
